Practice

My practice is and has always been a general practice. It involves all aspects of pre-trial, trial and appellate proceedings. It includes: management of office, office taxes and budgeting, and overseeing staff (including secretaries, legal assistants, and of counsel attorneys): consultation with clients: correspondence with courts, clients, and other counsel: conducting legal research: preparation of motions, legal memoranda, and briefs: court appearances for trials, hearings, and oral arguments in various courts throughout Michigan. Additionally, I have regularly sat as a mediator on Mediation Panels in Eaton County from 1986 to date.

My background and experience allows me to work effectively in a consultative and collaborative role with various personnel. My years of vigorously representing the impassioned interests of others while maintaining the delicate balance of an objective grasp of the practical has made me an effective advocate.

I have an extensive background in the education, interaction, and negotiation with clients, opposing counsel, corporate entities, and judges. As an appellate advocate, I was required to develop and hone both my oral and written communication skills. Moreover, my years as a collegiate educator have significantly enhanced my abilities.

In the operation of a legal practice, I have had to be, first and foremost, a business person. I have personally dealt with all aspects of personnel, formulation and implementation of personnel policies, hiring, termination, unemployment benefits, employment taxes, and policy formulation. I have had the opportunity to engage in some intellectual property matters, including copyright activities and proprietary interests as well as the more normal and routine business matters. Also, as an Unemployment Agency Advocate for the State of Michigan, I have enhanced my experience in the area of personnel, human resources, and employment matters.

I am able to consult and advise a wide variety of clients on a wide variety of subjects, in essence, to succinctly explain the law, to explore viable alternatives, and to develop appropriate strategies.

The drafting of effective and persuasive memorandums and briefs for the benefit of clients, trial courts, and appellate courts has always been a significant part of my practice. My experience and teaching law makes my service extremely beneficial and cost effective.

As a litigator, my experience throughout the state in a variety of civil matters in both Circuit and District Courts would make my membership on a legal team a very valuable asset. Additionally, my experience in both trial and appellate litigation would provide a uniquely valuable perspective in monitoring, coordinating, and/or working with outside counsel. I am and have been an active “team player” in various multiple Attorney lawsuits; as a faculty member at Lansing Community College; as a Class Representative on the Board of Governors of the Thomas M. Cooley Law School Alumni Association; with the Grand Ledge High School Wrestling Program; and as a member of Mudge’s Follies.

I have been involved in enough unusual legal problems to have gained a particular appreciation for and insight into the prevention of legal problems and for conflict resolution. I possess the creativity necessary for the formulation and implementation of institutional strategies for preventing legal adversities.

Lately, because of the nature of being a general practitioner in private practice, I have developed the ability to be a “quick study” in many complicated legal and non-legal area. Having accomplished all that I desired in private practice, I am fully prepared and eager to undertake the challenges that I view as being in the realm of public service.
